Outfit creater Chris Scotney presented Henry Shipley with his new uniform today

Post horn Gallop player Henry Shipley is back on Leicester City's pitch after a break of nearly 50 years.

Henry (77), from Syston, has been chosen to play the Post horn Gallop and provide an historic soundtrack at every home Premiership game at the Walkers Stadium this season.

The club appealed for a horn player who could perform a live rendition of the Foxes traditional entrance tune The Post horn Gallop.

And Henry proved to have all the right notes for Foxes' pre-match slot.

Henry will play the piece of music 15 minutes before kick off and again as the team runs out onto the pitch at the Walkers Stadium this coming season.

And he will also have a smart new outfit to complete the spectacle as he has been decked out in a blue coachman’s outfit thanks to men's designer store Christopher Scotney.

Henry will be dressed in a navy frock coat and white jodphurs courtesy of the London Road store.

Henry first played the Post horn Gallop at Filbert Street back in the early 1940s with the Home Guard Band.

He said: "My brother bought me a Post Horn for my 15th birthday and I used to play it down at the ground in both the Home Guard Band and the City of Leicester Special Constabulary Band."

"I've played it before in front of 42,000 fans at Filbert Street and also in front of the Queen and Prince Charles. The last time I played it at Filbert Street was in 1957.

"I've been practising because it's not a straight forward tune to play but I love the reaction you get from a crowd when you play the first two notes - there's always a roar of appreciation. The Post horn Gallop is what the fans want and the Walkers Stadium is just the place to play it especially in such a smart outfit. It's an absolutely wonderful place."

"My wife persuaded me to contact the club and I'll be playing at the Barcelona match on Friday! It's absolutely brilliant I am back at the club playing one of my favourite tunes."

A club spokeswoman said: “The club wanted a dedicated person to perform a live rendition of the Post horn Gallop."

We are delighted to welcome Henry back to the club after all these years and have no doubts that he will soon become an integral part of the club and a firm fans' favourite."

Chris Scotney, who has also supplied matchday suits for all the LCFC players and playing staff, added: “We were only too pleased to help the football club with a suitable outfit for Henry.”

Henry’s appointment is part of a significant overhaul of pre-match entertainment for the coming season.

For decades the Foxes have run onto the pitch to the emotive strains of the Post horn Gallop.

The tune, once recorded by the Band of Royal Marines, was originally used to herald the arrival of mail coaches in the 19th century. It would be played as the horse drawn coaches travelled across the county warning passers-by of the approaching vehicle.

The tune dates back at Filbert Street to at least the 1930s when a lone man stood at the tunnel dressed in a blue and white flock coat with a top hat to match.
